YAB's main wellness indicator in which to build their prevention strategies is to increase the number of youth who report a caring adult in their life. All strategies developed by YAB are focused on this promotive and protective factor. Three new adults have volunteered to join YAB in 2025 and will be orientated at the January meeting. Mentoring is a key strategy for this work. In addition to YAB, the Buffalo County Violence Prevention Coalition connects mentoring program, Friends Program, to the community response program to ensure all youth are connected to a caring adult.

Early on, we worked with the Dakota County Extension group and South Sioux City Library to identify young people who were not well-connected in schools. Together we started a group where they could meet friends and develop leadership skills. Recently, we have had the opportunity to take on facilitating the Sioux City Mayor’s Youth Commission, encouraging youth involvement through volunteerism and dialogue with the city council. Looking ahead, we hope to establish a similar group in South Sioux City, creating an Iowa-Nebraska partnership that fosters friendships and stronger community connections. Additionally, we collaborate with the South Sioux City Optimists, who have an active Junior Optimist group focused on community engagement.

The Young Buffalo Talking Circle is held in Santee Community schools and Niobrara Public School during the school year, targeting Native youth in Santee and Niobrara. This group also functions as a Youth Council. It provides a forum to develop strength & wellness, accentuate protective factors, and undertake cultural activities such as ribbon skirt making, quilling, and making traditional foods that reinforce the concept that culture is prevention.

Through YC3's Child, Youth, and Families Subcommittee, a Youth Advisory Initiative (YAI) Task Force was developed. The goal of YAI is to work with youth who are often overlooked within our communities. High school students, in particular, are struggling more with mental health challenges and antisocial behaviors. YAI aims to encourage these youth to engage in prosocial behaviors. Adult sponsors of YAI hope that the youth feel both invited and empowered within the group. It is important that the youth feel their voices are heard and valued when participating in YAI. The task force has begun meeting with youth and is currently focused on recruitment activities.
