Lived Experience partners are important to the work of CFP. We have a lived experience person on our Steering Committee. We pull together lived experience folks for specific topic discussions e.g. childcare licensing challenges, getting resource information to folks living in hotels, etc. .

Purposefully contracting with and eventually hiring participants to do the work of our programs has been very beneficial. These individuals work in the middle space between the office team and the individuals in need - often working in coaching, advocacy or outreach roles. The effort began very simply - two participants in Bridging Forward (see other activities) wanted to 'give back' to the program for services they had received, so we asked them to meet with prospective program participants, often going to their homes or seeking them out in the community. When the 'messaging' comes from someone with more lived and practical experience it is simply heard differently - ultimately more effectively. Two individuals then began doing contract work which we compensated with gift cards before moving to a formal hire. One of main benefits has been as an advocate for an individual with the court or the school system. These team members add legitemacy to conflicts there. We have had to work hard at staying in communication, giving clear direction and keeping these team members looped in. Any trouble spots we have experienced had been a case of 'too many cooks in the kitchen'.

YC3 hosts monthly meetings to encourage networking, engagement, and the sharing of lived experiences. These gatherings provide a space for individuals to connect, share insights, and collaborate. Each quarter, we hold in-person meetings at a local conference space, with a focus on bringing lived experiences to the table. In January 2025, we were fortunate to have a powerful presenter who shared her personal journey of raising two sons with disabilities, both of whom are in wheelchairs. She spoke about the challenges and triumphs of ensuring her children were included in both school and community life. Her story was a moving reminder of the importance of inclusion and the barriers that still need to be addressed. These meetings continue to grow, attracting people from all walks of life, and often conclude with thoughtful discussions and action steps aimed at improving our community. We look forward to the continued exchange of ideas and experiences as we work together to make York County a more inclusive and supportive place for all.
